PTA Kicks Off the Year

September 9, 2008

Monday, September 8.  The weather was balmy, the chips and salsa plentiful, and the children were supervised on the playground while the adults gathered in the amphitheater for the first PTA membership meeting of the 2008-2009 school year.

Kids all received a free pencil and ruler, and adults all got a free raffle ticket for a doorprize.  PTA President Heather Chambers led the meeting, introducing reports from Kellianne White, Vice President; Principal Patti Crum and Vice Principal Sheldon Reynolds; PTA Treasurer Rashid Curtis; and PTA Secretary Angie Douglas.  PTA committee chairs told parents and teachers what the Grounds Committee (Chair Sabrina Lamar), Communications Committee (Chair Karalyn Colopy), Fundraising Committee (Chair Alice Bumgarner), Parent Involvement Committee (Chair Carolina Musawwir), SOS (“Support Our Schools” – Chair Angie Douglas) would be aiming to do this year.

Donna Rewalt, past PTA President, reported that Durham County and Durham Public Schools have officially agreed to create a new Montessori middle school, to be housed in the what is currently the Lakewood YMCA.  The school will be operational for the 2010-2011 school year!

To help set the tone for future PTA meetings, all attendees were asked to fill out an index card listing any topics they would like to see addressed, such as Montessori educational methods or specifics about our school or school system.  The PTA board collected the cards and will use the information to arrange for special speakers or demonstrations at upcoming meetings.

Finally, to help parents understand a little more about Montessori education, Carolina Musawwir presented a “Montessori moment” – a brief demonstration of a math game that parents can play with their kids at home using homemade Montessori cards.

The meeting concluded with the doorprize drawing.  The big basket of gourmet treats went to primary teacher Amanda Watson.  Congratuations, Amanda!  What will the prize be at the next meeting?  A new car?  A fur coat?  Swiss fudge cookies?  Who knows!  But you can’t win if you’re not there!  Mark your calendars now for November 10 at 6 pm!

Not a PTA member yet?  It’s only $3 – the best deal in town!  Contact Angie Douglas, PTA Secretary, at, if you’ve lost your application form.
