The annual Book Fair at the George Watts Media Center is an exciting, colorful, book lovers’ feast. For one full week – December 2-9 – the school’s Media Center is jam-packed with hundreds of books for sale, fiction and non-fiction, on all sorts of subjects, in every price range. Book Fair hours:

  • Monday, Dec. 2:  7:30am -3:00pm for teacher and student preview
  • Tuesday, Dec. 3 – Friday, Dec. 6:  3:30pm – 6:00pm for family and friends shopping
  • Monday Dec.9 :  7:30am –  7:00pm for family and friends shopping

Here’s how parents can be a great help:

  • Donate a few dollars for a child in need at George Watts to buy a book. To do this, download a donation form (a blank gift certificate). Print it out and return it with your donation (make checks payable to “George Watts PTA”) in your child’s folder, or bring it to Mrs. Ham if you go to the Book Fair yourself. (Donation forms are also available at the Book Fair and on the PTA bulletin board by the carpool entrance to the school.) We hope that through our donations, we can ensure that students in every classroom all have the same opportunities to take home a new book at their reading level.  Says one George Watts teacher:“Every year I worry about my kids who can’t afford a book at the book fair. There are usually a few $1 books, but it would be nice for them to have a choice of books. It would be great to have a donation pot for kids who don’t have money for books. On the last day of the book fair, teachers could send those kids who didn’t get one to the book fair to get a $1 to $3 book from the fair.” Working together, we hope to put “a book in every bookbag!” Last year, at the 2012Book Fair, we collected over $300 in donations to meet the needs of many students who had not been able to purchase a book at the Book Fair.
  • Volunteer Dec 2-9 with sales and helping children select items. You can email Mrs. Ham (kay.ham@dpsnc.net), call her at the school (560-3947) or just drop by the Media Center to talk to her. The Book Fair runs every day and she could use an extra pair of hands almost any time.  She’ll especially need help on Tuesday morning – December 10 to close the book fair.
  • Purchase a book as a gift for your child’s class or another class. Each teacher makes a wish list, which Mrs. Ham will have posted at the Fair.
  • Shop at the Book Fair! Books make great gifts, and the Fair has so much to choose from!  There is sure to be something to please every child. Parents are welcome to come with their child during his/her scheduled time to purchase or Tuesday the 2nd through Friday the 6th (3:30 pm-6:00 pm) and Monday the 9th (7:30am to 9:30 pm and 3:30 pm to 7:00 pm).
  • Shop the Online Book Fair!  Visit the Watts Book Fair Homepage at George Watts Book Fair and click on the Shop Now button.  Online shopping is available until Friday, December 13th.  All online orders ship for FREE to the school, after the Online Fair has ended.

When you buy a book at the Book Fair, you’re contributing to the school’s main source of funds for maintaining and improving our library. Books don’t last forever – kids lose them, dogs chew on them, pages get ripped and scribbled on, or (a book’s best hope) they simply get dated. The Media Center needs money to keep more books coming to the shelves and to try to stay up to date with technology.  Last year, as part of the profit from sales, Mrs. Ham pulled over $1200 worth of hard cover books from the book fair shelves for our Media Center. Plus the school received over $1000 to purchase additional books for our school’s collection! However you can help with the Book Fair is very much appreciated. Thank you! Also, don’t miss this year’s fun family events.
